Sierra Trout

I spent some time at our cabin this past weekend. We had a decent front coming through and a I knew it would get the fishing moving. Fortunately I was able to get in the Mtns before it rolled through. There is that magic window when the pressure drops and the fish start snapping. It happens with a lot species and I was lucky to be there. I jumped around to a couple of different places but settled on a small lake close to the cabin that has a unique population of wild bows. They were all over streamers and I had a great time with it.  It rained good amounts at 5k elevation but seemed to be much heavier down lower.  Here are a few shots of some of the fish..Nothing of great size but lots of fun.

Winter fishing..

Weather is about as nice as it can be. Mid 70s today. Fishing is kinda slow..good number of trout and Stripers on the lakes but you have to work for them. Carp on the fly is really the most consistant right now. Lots of shots on nice fish. Not to many big fish around but the average is 7-10lbs and those are around in qty. That's  about it for now. Go fishing and enjoy the rest of the weekend.

2014...

Better late then never I suppose. 2014 was good on the fishing front. A good number number of new spiecies and pretty consistant.. I did not fish anywhere near as much as years past but the time I did spend on the water was meaningful and that's what it's really all about these days. If I have to pick one fishing accomplishment it would have to be feeding my first dit Rooster from the beach. It was only about 10lbs but I really worked hard to make that happen. I only caught two off the beach the whole week but both were really really rewarding. Close second was a 90lb Marlin on fly..epic! I have some trips lined up and looking forward to a healthy family and  productive year on the water. Here are a few highlight images from 2014.

January California Delta Crappie!

Carpin was great all year.

Sad but I did not chase Stripers as much this year. Changing that TODAY!

Coming to an end..

Another year passed. Crazy how fast time flies. The holidays were good. We spent it in the country, had some family fun and a few fish were caught. Cannot complain!

High flying Sandhill Cranes

Slabs to be had on the fly right now. Not a great fighting fish by any means but worthy and tasty!

Couple of Bows caught on xmas day.

Carp on the Fly is excellent in winter around here. Especially tidal/ marsh fish.  Lots of shots on clearwater cruisers. Most in the 7-10lb range this time of year with an occasional teener. Its the kind of challenging fishing I like and wait for all year long. The water cleans up and makes it much more visual and fish don't have an agenda besides food. Sunday was picture perfect for winter Carpin.

About time ...

We have had some real rain.  Long way to go but a great start to a comeback from years of sub par rain and snow. Its been a really mild winter so far in the coastal region where I live.  Carp on the fly is as good as it gets with all the rain fall we have had.  They are comfortable and eating well.  Especially tidal/ estuary fishing.  A buddy and I got out for a couple of hours and we had plenty of shots on shallow fish on a cloudy tough sky day. With some sun we would have  smoked em.

We will see where this winter takes us but I am hopefull. I went hiking around in the Santa Cruz Mtns near home and it was as beautiful as it gets for Northern California.  Even saw a few small steelhead in the pools.

Have a great Holiday!
